David Roberts, manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers announced today that Kenta Maeda (3rd in Rookie of the Year running in 2016) will be removed from the starting rotation moving forward, thus being moved to the bullpen in hopes he can rebound from his rough start to 2017(5.16 ERA, 9 HR’s surrendered). The move is corresponding with the return of Alex Wood.
The move comes to no one’s surprise, as Maeda has posted back to back sub-par 4 inning starts, and the Dodgers manager has stated this is not a temporary move. With front line starters in Clayton Kershaw, Rich Hill, and returning Alex Wood, the Dodgers have the depth at starting pitching to make this move with no hiccups, and will continue to try and get Maeda back on track towards his most recent success in 2016. The recent success of Hyun-Jin Ryu being back into the rotation has somewhat to do with the demotion of Maeda, and it appears the Dodgers may continue to rotate the last few spots in their rotation for the 2017 season as needed. Either way, they still are set up for success moving forward, especially with arguably the best pitcher in baseball toeing the rubber every five days in Kershaw.
